Responsive / Collaboration.

As a starting point we selected various briefs from both, YCN & D&AD, from this selection of briefs we thought about which ones would be the most successful to work together on...

The Feel Good Company - YCN Student awards 2012-2013 briefs. (Quick turnaround, could be done as a side brief/ 1 or 2 days)

Fedrigoni - Main focus, YCN Student awards 2012-2013 briefs. A large workload, could be done to a high standard with two pairs of hands/ paper craft.

BBC - D&AD selection/ would have to analyse other channels to gain a better understanding of brief.

BacardiYCN Student awards 2012-2013 briefs, could be good as a chance to tackle different processes and a chance to experiment with packaging and presentation.

Why have you chosen to work with your creative partner? What are your aims?

I've chosen to work with Luke Rossiter because we share similar interests in terms of what we want to achieve from our collaboration. We both wanted to try something different that we'd both not done before, as oppose to staying on illustrator for the majority of the brief.

What are your specific areas of creative interest in this brief?

Our main interests for our chosen brief are to create something engaging that will ultimately inspire the use of all the varieties of Fedrigoni papers. Choosing this specific brief will also develop our creative knowledge, building an awareness of the print industry, Through the possibilities of origami, stock motion, photography, 3D format.

What specific design skills do you have to offer in relation to your chosen brief? How do you intend to use them?

I really think mine and Luke's imagination/ conceptual thinking will help during the development of our design approach. Luke has an understanding of stop motion and I also have experience in photography, hopefully this combination will create something unique to our brief.

What specific non-design skills do you have to offer in relation to your chosen brief. How do you intend to use them?

Writing Comprehensively - Applicable to the content of our publication

Time management/ allocation - Key factor when allocating job roles and understanding the pressures of design etc

Keeping up-to date with blogging/ using online resources effectively - I'll be using this skill to effectively demonstrate our progress and generation of ideas

Confidence in enquiry - A good skill to have when it comes to communicating with contacts and gaining the materials we need

What will your specific roles be in collaboration in relation to the brief?

Refer to '3 week plan', demonstrating our roles in collaboration throughout the development of our progress

What will your individual responsibilities be in relation to you brief?

Obtaining a substantial amount of research, visually displaying concepts in an understandable manner, generating our ideas and design boards that have influenced our content. At this moment in time were still generating our design approach, once we've gained a full understanding of our production, we'll then allocate roles.

10 points about what we both agree on in relation to the brief and our ideology:

  • Similar feelings towards environmental impact of the Paper Industry
  • That the Fedrigoni brief was our best option in terms of how creative we could be
  • That the brief provides us with the opportunity to work effectively as a collaboration, Paper-craft is light(er) work with two pairs of hands
  • The time constraints provide us with the time to be experimental as well as developmental
  • But also push us to be efficient and manage our time appropriately because we intend on planning our design route (to a degree)
  • We are both fascinated by the range of papers and 'special' papers Fedrigoni provides as a business
  • We'd like a better understanding of stock so we're able to apply our knowledge to our own work
  • PAPER IS IMPORTANT?!
  • We know there's a chance we could win if we put our minds and worked successfully as a collaboration
  • We want a perfected outcome with no flaws

10 differences me and Luke share:

  • Luke has a firm understanding of stop motion and animation
  • Construction is a strong point of mine, mainly because I've grew familiar with the processes over our last briefs
  • Refining my deliverables is a strong point of mine whereas...
  • Luke's more of an experimental designer and conceptual thinker
  • I often work late into the night
  • Luke has never missed any session, a solid 100% attendance
  • I'll often change my idea based on feedback and input of research whereas...
  • Luke has a strong implication to pursue his design ideas
  • Our approaches to research our different in terms of how much we obtain etc
  • I've gained a firm understanding of laser cutting

10 Similarities we share as a pair:

  • The growing desire to find out more about the Print Industry
  • Motivation
  • We've both paired up with the idea of winning a strong possibility
  • Awareness of creative practices
  • Both interested in laser cutting & screen printing, as a pair we're aware of the creative possibilities through these mediums
  • Efficient designers with a range of different skills (we've made it this far)
  • We're both interested in trying something new and visually communicating through a method we've not come across yet
  • Both happy staying until the jobs done!
  • Design isn't all tedious, we want to have some fun and see what's possible with this in mind.
  • We're flexible in terms of allocating job roles to one another

The actual logo of Fedrigoni was provided within the deliverables making it possible to edit the logo in terms of what parts you want to use. The only drawback to the brief's assets were that they didn't supply a brand guideline, this would've made it possible to see how much of the logo we had to incorporate, e.g. use the badge as a sole character.

Conceptual thinking, initial ideas...

Develop an iconic scene derived from Italy and the traditions of Fedrigoni, built up in 3D form, taking into account perspective. Show the print quality of each paper/ through the use of advertisements in the iconic scene...

Have a printer spurting out lots of different types of paper, paper crafted into specific shapes related to uselessness. Then have a piece of fedrigoni paper smoothly come out with an aura around it, something amazing on it that represents quality etc.

Use a dimmed room, with most of the light emitting from the screen of a Mac computer. Take into account perspective, develop origami/ characters that will be flowing out of the computer screen, the characters will look as if they're all going somewhere, then you see a little paper crafted Fedrigoni shop with the characters entering this... concept/ do your designs justice,  use Fedrigoni paper to print them.

Strengthening my concepts...

We knew that our ideas were going to include a lot of work, but to achieve the results we'd want, it was going to take a lot of work regardless so we decided, it would of been a better idea to plan our time, following up to the laser cutting session we'd booked. To make sure the final result wasn't jeopardised by our lack of planning, we spent ages planning each layer of the publication to make sure that when they were cut, they were all in the exact same place as the previous, hopefully this would give us a clean-cut finish and cause a sort of tunnel effect, bringing whatever is protruding from the consistent area to life through the use of depth and perception.

Myself and Luke sat down one afternoon and decided it was time to plan the contents of our scene; what Italian features we'll permeate, what sort of landscape we'll use, What type of printing mill would be best appropriate?...

Luke's attempt was much more helpful in terms of seeing how the process would bring the layers together, whereas my sketch displayed the finer detail in the image and how they could overlap
