Design For Print, An investigation into Stocks/ techniques for print

The focus of this session was largely based around stock and the range of weights and textures that are available to myself as a designer through companies such as 'GF SMITH', I can enquire to look at the samples and once I've decided on a specific paper type, I can obtain some samples of these.

7things I need to know about print...

- Colour models
- Formats
- Artwork
- Processes
- Finishing
- Costs

Colour Models
- CMYK - The CMYK color model (process color, four color) is a subtractive color model, used in color printing, and is also used to describe the printing process itself. CMYK refers to the four inks used in some color printing: cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black).

- RGB - The RGB color model is an additive color model in which red, green, and blue light are added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colors. The name of the model comes from the initials of the three additive primary colors, red, green, and blue.

- Hexchrome - Hexachrome was a six-color printing process designed by Pantone Inc. In addition to custom CMYK inks, Hexachrome added orange and green inks to expand the color gamut, for better color reproduction. It was therefore also known as a CMYKOG process

- Spot Colour - In offset printing, a spot color is any color generated by an ink (pure or mixed) that is printed using a single run.

- PMS - Pantone Matching System - The Pantone Color Matching System is largely a standardized color reproduction system. By standardizing the colors, different manufacturers in different locations can all refer to the Pantone system to make sure colors match without direct contact with one another.

Formats
- Standard ISO

- A & SRA sizes - The RA and SRA paper formats are defined by ISO 217 "Paper - Untrimmed Sizes" and cover untrimmed raw paper for commercial printing. The RA and SRA sizes are slightly larger than the corresponding A series sizes to allow for bleed on printed material that will be later trimmed to size, often for bound publication.

From these examples you can see how stock would effect the tone of your communication as-well as colours. With some investigation I could easily consider what stock finishes etc would be more suitable for my final outcomes and purchase externally. This would benefit me because I'd have a stronger grasp on the concepts of commercial printing.

We were shown a large range of stocks across a wide range of publications, and what surprised me most was the urge I got to emboss/ deboss. If executed well, I really think mixing methods such as Gold foiling and debossing would look extravagant.

"Paperback started selling recycled paper and boards in 1983. Our aim was to help the recycling loop by promoting greater use of recycled paper and this is still our objective. We remain the only UK paper merchant specialising in recycled papers."

For my work to look more professional, I need to broaden my contacts in terms of who I interact with and buy supplies from, Instead of always using the same bog standard stock from the Library and Print dungeon, I could easily get hold of exclusive ranges of coloured and textured papers "The definitive collection of premium materials for design and print."
