What is good? Concept development


Personal list

  1. Takeaways - Indulgence, better than making food
  2. Buying new clothes - Getting what you want, portray yourself/
  3. Running - Cardio, release stress, sense of well being
  4. Finishing work and then relaxing - sense of achievement/ pride
  5. Getting home cooked meals - fulfilment, satisfied, no effort
  6. Spending your own money - accomplishment, care, appreciation
  7. Holidays -relaxation, you feel like all your troubles have disappeared, enjoying the moment
  8. Nature - adaptive, functional, effective, sustaining life
  9. David Attenborough - Calming, Icon, Educational/ informative

  1. Home cooked meals - comfort, reminder of childhood, taste, no effort
  2. Art and design - getting inspired, thought provoking work
  3. Travel - seeing new things, new experiences, different cultures
  4. Finishing work and relaxing - relief, sense of achievement
  5. Music - sounds good, makes you feel better, entertaining
  6. Lie ins - lazy, relaxing, not caring

Turning good to bad
  1. Cake and dessert - unhealthy, damage your teeth, sickly
  2. Sunshine - get sunburnt, makes you squint, get to hot and sweaty, dehydrated
  3. Live music - to loud, the band could be disappointing not as good as recorded songs, annoying crowd
  4. Clean sheets - getting an allergic reaction to the washing powder, having to wash them in the first place, starchy
  5. Cheese - smelly, could be allergic, fatty, mouldy, stringy cheese gets everywhere
  6. Films - no idea what's going on, everyone has different tastes so could be difficult to pick, not productive
  7. Making people laugh - could be an inappropriate moment, laughing at you not with you
  8. Playing instruments - expensive, listening to someone who can't play is annoying
  9. Adventure - dangerous, tiring, getting lost, stressful
  10. Learning something new - could take forever, frustrating, time consuming

Out of the closure of the studio walls, I began thinking about the bigger concept of 'what is good' and the different applications of the word, but first... I had to understand all of the different definitions, hopefully this would broaden my generation of ideas. Below you can see I've highlighted the more important definitions, (the rest can be found on the following link).


  1. To be desired or approved of: 'a good quality of life.
  2. Pleasing and welcome
  3. Showing approval; the play had good reviews
  4. Having the required qualities; of a high standard: a good restaurant
  5. Skilled at doing or dealing with a specified thing: I'm good at crosswords
  6. Useful, advantageous, or beneficial in effect, e.g. too much sun is not good for you
  7. appropriate to a particular purpose: this is a good month for planting seeds
  8. fulfilling all the principles of something particular
  9. Possessing or displaying moral virtue
  10. Commanding respect
  11. Thorough
  12. benefit or advantage to someone or something
  13. Merchandise or possessions.
